Wash Water Injection Nozzles

Injected water into process lines to wash contaminants and piping components


Wash water is injected into process lines in the refining, petrochemical, power generation, and chemical industries to wash contaminants from gas streams and piping components. This wash water process plays an important role in the process of refining crude oil into its component fractions. Initially, wash water is injected to remove salts and halides from the crude oil through precipitation before they are able to corrode and degrade the refining system itself. Later in the refining process, wash water injection nozzles spray into the hydrocarbon streams to clean it of residual solid particles.

BETE spray nozzles are designed to maximize efficiency in wash water injection applications as they atomize and distribute the wash water into the process stream or vessel which increases the coverage and reaction surface area of the water. Spray nozzles coupled with BETE injection lances can distribute the wash water as evenly as possible along the center line or desired areas of process streams or vessels.

Selecting a Wash Water Injection Nozzle: 

Important factors to consider:

  • Process pipe/vessel size, velocity, pressure, temperature, and fluid composition
  • Available installation ports and required clearance diameters
    • In general process piping applications, a minimum of 3-5 pipe diameters of straight length upstream and 5-10 pipe diameters of straight length downstream are recommended to ensure spray dispersion
  • Required materials of construction for corrosive environments
  • Ease of maintenance/replacement
    • Retractable lances allow for quill/lance removal while leaving the process online
  • Required/available wash water flow rate
  • Available pressure drop (∆P) across the nozzle
    • ∆P = supply pressure at nozzle inlet - process pressure outside nozzle
