Absorption Nozzles

Scrub hydrofluoric acid, ammonia and other highly soluble gases

Manufacturing plants and refineries produce and use highly soluble gases such as hydrofluoric acid (HF) or ammonia. Mitigation of accidental releases of these gasses can often be accomplished with water spray that has a small average droplet size, thereby maximizing the surface area to volume ratio. This allows the greatest contact between the water and the corrosive gas. A cloud of small droplets can be most effectively created by pumping it through an appropriate BETE nozzle. Once well distributed, the water will absorb the airborne gas, allowing it to be captured and contained.

Selecting an Absorption Nozzle:

In most applications, maximizing the surface area to volume ratio of the spray is the most important factor as this exposes the greatest amount of surface area. As the absorption kinetics are primarily driven by surface area, this leads more efficient capture of the gas by the liquid.

Our engineers can calculate the best distance between nozzles to ensure the best nozzle spacing for coverage. Additionally, a material such as Teflon, Kynar, or PVC is sometimes prefered due to the corrosive nature of the gases involved. Commonly, a BETE spiral TF series nozzle operating at 100 psi is most appropriate. These multi-cone or hollow-cone nozzles provide a fine droplet size, wide angle, and appropriate flow rate to allow the water and gas to mix efficiently. Absorption nozzles are used to scrub hydrofluoric acid, ammonia and other soluble gases in oil refineries and chemical plants. Nozzles are also used in towers and columns where absorption is an integral part of the overall process stream.
