Common Nozzle Applications in the Pollution Control Industry

Gas Scrubbing

  • Dry scrubbers
    • SOx removal using lime slurries or other scrubbing agents
  • FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization)
    • Spraying lime slurry or other scrubbing fluid into flue gas from coal fired power plants to absorb the sulfur oxides created during the cumbustion process
      • Due to the erosive nature of many scrubbing fluids, high wear resistant materials for this application include silicon carbide (SNBSC and RBSC) as well as cobalt alloys
  • Odor control
    • Liquids can be sprayed to mask or chemically alter the smell of products, waste, process streams, or exhaust gas
  • Packed bed scrubbers
    • Acid scrubbers
      • Hydrochloric (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric (HNO3), or hydroflouric (HF) acids
    • Halogen removal
      • Cl2, Br2, F2
    • Ammonia/amine scrubbing
  • SCR/SNCR applications
    • Control NOx emissions using ammonia (NH3) or urea solution
    • Nozzles spray ammonia or urea solutions to absorb nitrogen oxides which are produced after most combustion processes and which emissions are limited by environmental regulations
  • Venturi scrubbing
    • A form of gas scrubbing in which the gas passes through a narrowed section of ducting where high velocities help to ensure thorough mixing and contact between the gas and scrubbing fluid
  • Wash water injection

Air Stripping

  • Air stripping and spray aeration nozzles are used to expose contaminated water to air to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and trihalomethanes (THMs)
    • By increasing the surface area of the contaminated water exposed to air, these unwanted chemicals are stripped from water through diffusion
  • Both open and packed tower arrangements are used
    • Whirl nozzles used for increased uniformity above packing
    • Spirals provide smaller droplet sizes in direct contact applications

Toxic Gas Mitigation

  • When toxic gas storage systems experience unexpected leaks or breakage, spray nozzles are used to envelop the tank or piping system in a cloud of protective spray which absorbs the gas to prevent dispersion into air.
